China has set a target of more than 1.2 billion kilowatts of installed power in 2030. At a scale of 15 percent, at least 180 gigawatts of storage would be required. At present, the development scale of new energy storage and pumped storage is relatively backward, so it is necessary to promote the coordinated development of pumped storage and new energy storage. By the end of 2021, China's installed capacity of pumped storage had reached 36.93 million kW, ushering in a new stage of comprehensive and rapid development of pumped storage. In addition, attention should be paid to the diversified development of pumped storage, and three aspects should be strengthened: the development of small and medium-sized pumped storage, the development of mixed pumped storage according to local conditions, and the exploration of the development and application of seawater pumped storage.

At present, the United States, Australia, the European Union and other countries and regions have taken new energy storage as one of the new driving forces of economic development, and have provided various support measures in terms of research and development funds, market mechanisms, electricity price subsidies, tax rebates and other aspects.
According to Bai Jianhua, changes in the power supply side and demand side of the power system require the development of energy storage. Access to a large number of solar power generation resources that depend on the sky at the power supply side, as well as the replacement of electric energy by terminal departments on the demand side, have greatly changed the load curve. It is necessary to comprehensively consider the total amount of power demand, characteristics, regional distribution and other characteristics to adjust and analyze the load curve adaptively, so as to determine the required scale of energy storage.

In the process of development, we need to focus on two issues. First, in order to cooperate with the development of new energy, it is necessary to match energy storage according to local conditions to avoid blindly building new infrastructure, which will cause unnecessary waste. Second, to avoid excessive protection of energy storage technology, it is necessary to enhance the market competitiveness of energy storage technology through market means.

The healthy development of energy storage needs reasonable market mechanism and feasible business model.
